Getting a high testosterone reading is something to show off
among some men at a certain age and may partly explain the appeal of
testosterone supplements. But once your testosterone level, the advertised male
hormone as the creator of energy, libido, and confidence, is in a normal range,
does it really tell you a lot?
Experts say that probably not.
A variation of a number within the normal range may not make
a difference. The biggest differences in energy and sex drive occur when men go
to a normal level when they were at a lower than average level.
A 2015 study in JAMA found that the sex drive increased in
men who went from 230 - considered a low level - to 500, around the midpoint of
what is considered normal. There was no difference between men who passed
within the normal range of 300 to 500.
Testosterone does influence the volume of muscle mass: the
more testosterone a man consumes, the larger his muscles will be - regardless
of the level at which he begins, a reason why the hormone is popular with young
people who do bodybuilding.
Keith Hall, a 48-year-old petrochemical operator from Baytown,
Texas, sought a doctor specializing in male health at Baylor University School
of Medicine because he was tired and lacked libido.

Edward Blake, a 53-year-old forklift operator from Houston,
looked for the same doctor for the same reasons. "I felt a little tired,
but after the third injection, I picked up objects without a problem,"
Blake said.
Pastuszak said that he mainly prescribes testosterone to men
in the lower category under the FDA — less than 300 — but sometimes he lets
other men with symptoms try it. "If you have these men in a medium-range
and put them in treatment, most will say they want to stay in it," he
said; he added that most men will say that it will make them feel better and
stimulate their sexual drive. However, is it the power of the hormone or the
power of suggestion?
"The reality is that we don't have the answer,"
Pastuszak said, stating that he really is unknown. "I have to take his
word when they tell me they feel better with her, regardless of whether the
effect is real or if testosterone acts as a placebo."
To complicate matters further, testosterone levels
fluctuate, have their highest level at eight in the morning and decrease during
the course of the day. The levels tend to reach their minimum level around
eight o'clock at night. The highest and lowest moments are longer for men whose
ages are less than 40 years compared to men after 70 (for a 40-year-old man, a
morning reading maybe 200 points higher than in the afternoon, against a
difference of 50 points for one of 70 years).
And all kinds of situations can push the levels in any direction.
Even so, any gain from such activities tends to be
ephemeral, the levels generally return to the normal level within about half an
hour.
Just as there are activities that men can do to increase
their levels, there are also activities that decrease them: endurance exercise,
such as training for a marathon or bicycle over long distances, can lower
levels, as well as stress.
Influenza and other viral diseases can also cause levels to
decline, so you should avoid evaluation until you are fully recovered.
But liver damage from chronic alcohol abuse obstructs the
production of testosterone.
